Blurb:
'Joclyn Despain has been marred by a brand on her skin. She doesn't know why the mark appeared on her neck, but she doesn't want anyone to see it, including her best friend Ryland, who knows everything else about her.

The scar is the reason she hides herself behind baggy clothes, and won't let the idea of kissing Ryland enter her mind, no matter how much she wants to. The scar is the reason she is being hunted. If only she knew that she was. If only she had known that the cursed stone her estranged father sent for her 16th birthday would trigger a change in her. Now, she is being stalked by a tall blonde man, and is miraculously throwing her high school bully ten feet in the air.

Joclyn attempts to find some answers and the courage to follow her heart. When Ryland finds her scar; but he knows what it means, and who will kill her because of it.'

Cover: The cover of this book is soo cute. I much prefer this version to the other one as it creates an image in our heads of the scene where Ryland gives Jos 'The Necklace'. This plays a huge part in the book. But more importantly I want that necklace.

Plot: Jocyln. Skater-girl. Hides behind her baggy-clothes so no-one finds out about the ugly scar hidden behind her hair. Best friends with Ryland. Beautiful, rich guy with a lovely personality. He's so thoughtful and kind and gahh I want a Ryland in my life. Like now-ish. Ryland's father, billionaire, extraordinaire, hates Joclyn hanging out with his son. She thinks it's just because she's the daughter of his cook, but it's much more.

Likes: What a book. I don't think I've fallen in love with a world this much since, either Vampire Academy or Riley Blackthorne's Atlanta. I loved the characters, as I mentioned in the plot, I WANT A RYLAND. Seriously he's like the nicest guy ever. And he takes care of Joclyn and treats her like a princess. Big points for him in my book. This book, well it was great. There are no other words. The last few chapters especially, blew me away. Three words, Epic. Battle. Scene. Seriously the cover doesn't do justice on the amount of action in this book. At points I was screaming/cursing at the book. It may not seem like a big deal, but at two in the morning whilst my seven year old sis was asleep, well I was loud.  I just... I can't... It was amazing. The last scene. I cried. I'm not ashamed to admit it. It's been a while since a book has inspired that much emotion in me.

Dislikes: It took a couple of chapters for me to get into it, but once I did, well let's just say I wasn't putting that book down anytime soon. Oh also more Ryland please. I know he's like mentioned at least once on every page, but it's not enough. I need more!

My Notes: This is a new segment where I share with you the notes I made whilst reading this book on my nook. There will be spoilers so beware.

Pg 16 - Love the Skater girl image/description.
Pg 22 - I love how protective Ryland is of her, and ANOTHER great description.
Pg 26 - Nitpick - I don't like how Jocelyn is spelled in this novel. *EDIT* I've come around to it!
Pg 36 - Koosa? Sounds like a greek yoghurt.
Pg 57 - Ryland is amazing. I think I'm in love. He's helping her again! :')
Pg 60 - 'Interlocking lips' OMG misread that as interlocking hips. Darn you dirty mind.
Pg 61 - 'Serving girl marrying a king' Wills and Kate anyone?? Well she's not a serving girl, but then again neither is Jos. Go for it!
Pg 61 - 'Edmund would kill me.' Jeez either she's being overdramatic or Edmund must run a mafia.
Pg 63 - 'Obnoxious girl' Judgemental much? You just met her!
Pg 68 - 'He pulled off his Whittier Academy Blazer and draped it over one shoulder.' Do people actually do that??
Pg 87 - 'Not everyone left you because of the mark, you know.' WTF Mom? Not helpful! They left because of your personality, your baggy clothes, just you in general.
Pg 241 - Love the Macbeth reference. Just did that in English so I get the quote!
and lastly, I won't say the page but EPIC BATTLE SCENE.

Verdict: I definitely under-estimated this book. I didn't think it was going to be THAT good. I'm going to go out and buy the paperback so I can have it on my bookshelf with my books I plan on re-reading. I'm going to give it an 9/10. RYLAND. *Sigh* Ethington sure knows how to write good Male characters. (Ilyan was cool too Team Ilyan fans!) Can't wait for Eyes of Ember (Book #2)

Fave Quotes: ' "You have pretty eyes," he said softly.
" They look like diamonds," ' - Ryland.

'"I was six and bushes were cool."
"Well if I ever see a cool bush I'll point it in your direction."' - Joclyn and Wyn.
Joclyand.
This is so Ryland and Jos.
